Just realized it is (or is that was?) Mr. Mydland's birtday today. Anyone got some favorite Brent moments they want to suggest? Or perhaps an especially tasty He's Gone? In terms of He's Gone, I'll be putting on the one from Cape Cod, 10/27/79 (getting a head start on a TDIH coming up next week). The jam into Other One is especially wonderous.

Happy Birthday.

I am a huge Brent fan as that was my main era of touring.
Always liked Far from Me and Don't Need Love,(Augusta '84 being a smokin version).

One of my favorite memories involving Brent took place at the Spectrum in Philly in Spring of '85. A friend and I were at the back of the hall near the back of the first level. There was an usherette there who was just being a total pita to everyone thru the first set.(not unusual for a Philly show.) The band went into Don't Ease to end the set and when it came to Brent's solo he was just tearing it up. This seemed to get homegirl's attention and she actually started to pay attention to what was going on on the stage. As the song ended and the band headed for the set break, the usher was overheard to say "Damn...that white man was gettin' dooooowwnnn on them keyboards".
The entire second set she was totally into the show and never once hassled anyone for dancin in the aisles the rest of the night.

Happy Birthday Brent.

A fun fact from one of the many GD books I've read. When Brent checked into hotels he used the moniker Clifford Hanger.

Here's a couple pictures for y'all to enjoy.

Happy Birthday Brent!

Although I am not a huge fan of alot of Brent tunes (I will take you home, far from me, we can run) I absolutly loved his key-playin' and his interaction with Jerry.
I sure do hope he and Jer (and Pig, Kieth and Vince) are playin' that great gig in the sky.

I was surprised to find out that Brent's connection to the Dead started with him playing in the "Bob Weir Band"...

I don't usually like Brent's tunes, either. But for some reason, I have always loved "Just A Little Light," the song Michael MacDonald WISHES he'd wrote! :) Here's a nice live one:

How about the iko iko from 3/18/90? - right after jerry's 1st solo he goes into the my spot dog verse - and only bobby responds with the "hey nows"...brent is not singing -listen when brent chimes in with his "hey nows" then goes into a blistering solo - the next night in hartford has a great all over now with brent in fine form - big brent fan right here

I've always been a fan of the "Blow Away" on Disc 1 of Dozin' At The Knick. Pretty good "Just A little Light" on there as well.

OK, I'll admit it. I like the "Don't Need Love" from Augusta 84. One of his best vocal performances IMHO. Maybe the song itself doesn't really "fit" in with a second set, but taken by itself, I think it's OK.

I remember being really psyched that Jerry stayed on stage with him that time (he didn't usually). When I think of that night I still get flashbacks...

One of my favorite Brent-heavy performances is the SAMSON from Lehigh 9/25/81.

Great backing vocals and wicked cool sweeping/punchy keys.

I was always a big Brent fan. When the other boys couldn't always get things going you could count on Brent to whip people in to a frenzy by stealing Rooster from Bobby or getting all in a lather and swearing his way through Blow away or something.

One night that was a treat if you were a Brent fan was 3/26/90 in Albany from the Dozin' at the Knick run. It was a great 3 night run. The first time the Dead had played the place and Brent did like 4 or 5 songs that night... including the Blow Away and Little Light that made it to the Dozin' discs.

He could really be a showman when he wanted to be, and definitely added a lot of color to a broad palette. Sure did miss him when he left.
